PTCB vs. ExCPT: Which Certification Should You Choose?

Two different organizations certify pharmacy technicians nationally. Here’s how the PTCE (PTCB) and the ExCPT (NHA) actually differ.

The two certifications, at a glance

PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) and NHA (National Healthcareer Association) both offer nationally recognized pharmacy technician certification exams — PTCB’s is the PTCE, NHA’s is the ExCPT. Both can lead to using the CPhT credential name, but they’re separate organizations with separate exams, formats, and requirements.

Which one you should take depends mostly on what your state or employer requires or prefers — that’s worth confirming before you register for either.

Exam format differences

The PTCE is 90 multiple-choice questions (80 scored, 10 unscored pretest), scored on a 1000–1600 scale with a passing score of 1400.

The ExCPT is structured differently: 100 scored questions plus 20 unscored pretest questions (120 total), completed in a single 2-hour, 10-minute session at a PSI testing center or via live remote proctoring — a different testing-center network than the PTCE, which uses Pearson VUE. Passing score and current registration fee are set by NHA and best confirmed directly on NHA’s own site, since those specific figures aren’t published on NHA’s general program page.

Cost

PTCB’s PTCE costs $129 per attempt. NHA’s ExCPT fee is set by NHA and can change — verify the current price directly on NHA’s official site before you register rather than relying on any third-party article, including this one.

Recognition and state acceptance

Both PTCB and NHA certifications are recognized in many states, but not necessarily identically — some states, employers, or specific job postings may specify one over the other, or accept either. This is exactly the kind of detail that varies by state and changes over time, so check your state board of pharmacy’s current rules and any specific employer’s requirements rather than assuming either certification is universally interchangeable.

Neither certification is objectively “better” in the abstract — the right choice is the one accepted where you plan to work.
